The Upper Mississippi River is that part of the Mississippi River located upstream of Cairo, Illinois. In the distant past the Upper Mississippi River flowed abundantly and at will roaming where it will, cutting many channels in some places and filling them in others. The Upper Mississippi River water levels changed as the seasons changed every year. With the passage of time, the river has been constantly modified in an effort to improve navigation safety. In an effort to protect the river's diminishing habitat wildlife refuges were created starting in the 1920s. The Upper Mississippi River was declared a "nationally significant ecosystem and nationally significant navigation system" in 1986.

Features of The Upper Mississippi River
Wooded hills, bluffs, towns, cities, and agricultural land mark the Upper Mississippi River. This part of the Mississippi river is an important part of the commerce of the area and barges are used to transport many goods up and down the river. There is also many town and cities along the course of the river and you will find a number of lodgings along the way that you can stay in.

Ecology
The Upper Mississippi River is one of the main flyway for birds that are migrating during the spring and fall. Several safe spots found along the rivers course ensure their protection. There are also a number of regions along the river where you will find dense forests, which will provide a good habitat for wildlife that lives on the Upper Mississippi River. Over 120 fish species and 25 species of freshwater mussels call the Upper Mississippi River habitat home.

Many of the towns located along the rivers' course have docking or mooring facilities and you can find basic facilities, moderate facilities and even luxury facilities. If you are exploring and need to find additional mooring facilities then there are beaches, islands, and side channels. There are quite a number of old campsites along the course of the Upper Mississippi River, which are all close to civilization. Public and private campgrounds are also found along the river. There are also many towns that offer lodging facilities that range from motels to bed and breakfast, and most are close to a dock.

For many years the Upper Mississippi River has been treasured for its natural abundance and its usefulness. As a focal point for commerce and recreation many people will be going up and down the river for a long time.
