Sun, Sea and Space - Fly-drive in Florida

By: David Collins

What springs to mind when you think of Florida?

Sun? Sandy beaches? Sea World?

The presence of Walt Disney World and a multitude of theme parks and water parks on the outskirts of the state mean there is no shortage of attractions for families to visit.

But for those wanting to experience more of the Sunshine State, car hire allows the opportunity to tailor a holiday to their needs.

Fly-drive holidays are a popular choice for tourists who visit Florida, car rental is relatively cheap and available from all major airports in the state, and gives you the chance to experience more than just the theme parks.

Florida car hire offers the chance to experience the coastal roads of the state, with miles of sandy beaches to enjoy, with resorts such as Miami, Tampa and St Petersburg to enjoy along the way, as well as attractions such as the Kennedy Space Centre.

For a taste of nature, escape the theme parks and drive further south. Soon you'll find yourself surrounded by lush greenery and sandy beaches dotted with palm trees.

The Florida Keys are a popular destination for those looking to escape the theme parks and catch some sun and relax a little. For those looking for adventure there are a variety of activities available, such as scuba diving, cycle tours and glass-bottomed boat tours.

The lush swampland of the Everglades offers the chance to get up close to many species of animals indigenous to the Sunshine State.

Airboat tours are available throughout the year, though it's advisable to book ahead and to be wary of the time of year in which you want to travel - for levels of wildlife (including those pesky mosquitoes) will vary depending on the seasons.

Be wary of choosing to travel during the hurricane season, be sure to plan ahead and keep an eye on local weather reports, and don't venture out unless very necessary if you're unsure of weather conditions.
