What to take with you on an Alaska Cruise

By: Craigwilson
So you have booked a Cruise to Alaska, there are some common sense items you should make sure you take with you and some things you are best to do to make sure you make the most of your voyage to Alaska. Simply by planning ahead you can be relaxed knowing you have everything you need to enjoy your vacation.

Taking out some form of travel protection or insurance will be a good idea when you book your cruise. This insurance will provide you with different types of cover and will take effect immediately. Generally people like to plan ahead and so book their cruise well before they are due to travel. Nobody knows what is going to happen in advance and holiday insurance will cover you for illness, injury or death. This covered is extended to cover everyone traveling provided they are listed on the insurance policy. So even if it's the day before you are due to travel the insurance should cover any costs.

Your travel protection insurance will also cover you whilst you are in Alaska. Your insurance usually covers you for medical costs in the event of an accident or a serious injury whilst on your vacation. Should you require to be taken to hospital by helicopter from the ship then the insurance cover should cover this as well. Can you imagine the cost for a helicopter for a journey like that! Most holiday insurance will also cover your luggage and personal possessions. Check your policy for full details and make sure the cover is suitable for your needs.

If you are traveling from the United States make sure you have valid travel documents such as a valid passport or a copy of your birth certificate and appropriate photo identification. This will enable you to get back home in the event that the cruise leaves from Canada or makes a port of call in a Canadian port. For all other travelers you will already have your passports to gain entry to Canada or the United States already.

Plan ahead and make sure you pack appropriate clothing for the formal nights and some smart but casual attire for the less formal nights aboard the ship. Swimsuits and such shouldn't be forgotten for the ships pool and Jacuzzi.

Make sure you take into consideration the weather conditions in Alaska and take clothing suitable for the time of year you are traveling. By layering your clothes you can remain comfortable and warm at all times. If you have waterproof of hiking boots this will enable you to enjoy some of the shore excursions you otherwise wouldn't be able to without them.

Pack an appropriate amount of soap and shampoo for your needs. Don't expect the cruise company to provide anything better than you would expect in a hotel. If you don't like small bars of soap and a basic shampoo simply pack your own. Make sure you take enough toothpaste and lotions for the length of cruise and number of people traveling.

Take extra spending money for emergencies or if you want to dime out whilst in a port of call or for shopping. Don't take large amounts of cash it is advisable to take travelers cheques as these can be replaced, cash can't. Credit cards are widely accepted in Alaska.
