A Great Insiders Look at Leeds

By: Krissy Haze
Leeds is a big and prosperous city, which is centrally located in the North of England. There are plenty of famous names associated with the city, including Thomas Chippendale who began making his world-famous furniture there, and Michael Marks - of M & S fame – who, in 1884, opened his first Penny Bazaar there.

As well as this, Leeds is well known as home to Kirkgate Market. The historic market, which first opened in 1822 as an outdoor market, is Europe’s second largest indoor market and is open six days a week. Each week, it attracts over 100 thousand visitors. The first covered sections were built between 1850 and 1875. Unfortunately, much of the building was destroyed in a 1975 fire. Despite this, the Market was refurbished in the early 1990s and after this, Kirkgate Market was upgraded from a Grade II to a Grade I listed building.
