Despite often being overlooked in favour of Manchester, Leeds is a busy Northern city. it has a population of nearly 450 000 & attracts plenty of business visitors, too. Thanks to its numerous attractions, Leeds is also a top tourist location. With some fantastic modern architecture & exciting shops, Leeds has genuinely transformed itself in recent years. However, there are still many buildings that evoke the city's Victorian splendour, too. One of the most well known Victorian buildings is Leeds Town Hall, which was planned by the architect Cuthbert Brodrick. Leeds also has the amazing Kirkstall Abbey, which is situated in the western outskirts of the city. This beautiful Abbey is thought to be one of the most complete examples of a medieval Cistercian abbey in the UK. It has historical architecture, as well as beautiful gardens that are full of wildlife & greenery. Kirkstall Abbey was started in 1152 & took more than 75 years to build – it is now a grade I listed building. Leeds boasts a fantastic shopping centre, which has a shop to suit any pocket. In fact, you will find high-end stores in the city's Victoria Quarter, including branches of Harvey Nicholls, Flannels and other designer shops. In the Headrow Centre, you will find more cost-effective high-street shops including Dorothy Perkins, Warehouse and Game. If you are not keen on shopping, you will be pleased to know that Leeds has plenty more places of interest. These include the very educational Leeds City Museum & the Leeds City Art Gallery, which caters to the arty visitor. On the other hand, you could visit one of the city's superb parks or even the pretty Mandela gardens, which are situated in the heart of the city. These good-looking gardens were built to celebrate the millennium at a cost of ?12 million & were funded by Leeds council & the Millennium Commission. The gardens were awarded a prize at the 2004 Chelsea Flower Show, although they were damaged this year because of a major water fight. Any tourist passing by Leeds should make sure that they enjoy its nightlife. With wonderful restaurants, VIP bars and unforgettable clubs, you will have an out of this world evening there. It goes without saying that Leeds boasts a big gay community, so you'll find some fantastic gay bars dotted around the Calls area.
