Before tourism got hold of The State of North Carolina, the major industry here was agriculture. NC is the 7th largest Apple Producing State in the country. Henderson County is its largest apple producing county. No wonder then that North Carolina has been hosting a festival in honor of the juicy apple produced in the state.
The quaint city of Hendersonville, the county seat with an atmosphere of an old country town, has been hosting The North Carolina State Apple Festival since the early 1990's. The festival, itself, will be enjoying its 61st successive year in 2007.
Hendersonville is no stranger to hosting festivals; barefooting, street dances, farm city day and Foothills Highland Games are a few other activities and festivals, which keep the community busy and the atmosphere lively & joyous, throughout the year.
The Apple Festival, held over the Labor Day weekend, is a four day event. Until around the 80's, it used to be a celebration spread over seven to ten days. Even though the stars of the show are indeed the apples, there are a host of other activities and events organized that keep adults, as well as children, busy & entertained.
The festival is held on the Historic Main Street and covers almost 9 blocks of the street and features about 150 participating vendors. The activities start at 10am & continue till 10pm , with daily breakfasts, live musical performances, activities for children, arts & craft fair, special exhibits, youth activities, sports tournaments, delectable food and the Grand King Apple Parade. The place is the place to be for the whole family, except for the furry members, as animals are not allowed in the event area.
If you look at the proposed events list, you will realize that there is a lot more than apples on show. The King Apple Parade is held on Labor Day and features youth groups, floats, bands, fire trucks etc. The festival has an estimated attendance of 60,000 visitors dining the four days, locals & tourists both. The Parade officially ends the Festival on the Main Street.
