Lyon - the center of the French cuisine

Lyon is a city that knows its own worth and allows everybody to admire it, to find something new and only sometimes allows people to conquer it. Trust, it is not necessary to conquer it, you can let yourself to be conquered by this rich, complex, fascinating, civilized city.So imagine you are in Lyon, the third largest city in France that is fortunately located in the confluence of the Rhone and the Saone. Early in the morning when an opportunity offers to see harmonizing blue and pink tones in the sky, when fog comes up, Lyon looks the most attractive and mysterious. You will enjoy any moment at any time in this city because Lyon is a city of art, a city of history and a working city; it is a city that respects traditions during its ambitious development.Old blocks are a unique architectural ensemble. There are chickens and pheasants, decorated with mushrooms and truffles, pikes and oysters, edged with nuts and grapes, fruit and vegetables in addition and of course freshly baked bread.The best place from where you should begin your walk to see the sights of the city is The market St. Antoine where tourists and dwellers of the city, walking along the square, go to trade places, to taste and smell different products - shortly, they choose that what they will eat later, at lunch or at a family supper. Owners and managers of restaurants walk there too, choosing only the freshest products that are worthy to be prepared and served up.Not without a purpose Lyon is considered to be a city of delight and a center of art of cookery of the French nation. This is why it is a small wonder that dwellers of Lyon always have been being great gourmets.

It is interesting to know that in the old part of Lyon there are more restaurants than in any other part of the world. Such dishes as Lyon's sausage, quenelle and tripe are well-known all over the world. But we will speak about food a little later, now we will go to the old blocks of Lyon.When you go to Lyon you appear in a real history, full of delight and adventures. The old city with fine side streets called Traboule, represents a monument to the past of France. One more remarkable aspect of Lyon is an existing opinion that it was a center of the textile manufacture and silk weaving during the Middle Age. Big markets arose that time and a whole block of Renaissance architecture was built near the place where trade fairs where held, and now they are considered to be a gem of architectural art of Lyon.Thousands of small side streets will lead you from elegant and splendid villas to the industrial district Croix Rousse with its dark yards in front of the entrance of houses. Walking on the street mazes you can find bouchons and small restaurants that will offer you different dishes of the real Lyon's cooking, that is nourishing and at the same time delicate. One of the major dishes of it is the offal stuffed with grapes.Walking through the old Lyon, that is situated on the Fourviere hill near the cathedral St-Jean you will see many local buildings of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. The most important sights are the opera house and town hall that are situated on the square Place de Terre. Many other squares also represent a great cultural interest, among them are: Bellecour - the place of a meeting of the local dwellers; basilica with 4 octagonal towers and castellated walls, that was raised in the 19th century; the church St-Martin-d'Ainay that is one of the rare Roman churches that remained in Lyon. And of course there are a lot of museums that are not worse than those of Paris and attract tourists in the same way. The richness of the well-maintained museums increases thanks to the wonderful environment. So what is it better to taste in such a beautiful city, the center of the French cooking? Begin from the national dishes! They are: sausages, the offal, carvel de canew , the national dish with fresh cheese, rabbit meat in mustard sauce, wild boar meat and of course many other dishes.If you are thinking which souvenirs to buy for your relatives and friends, or which keepsake to buy for yourself that will remind you of this city, and will replace your collection of the things that symbolize those countries and cities you have already been to, then you should choose fabrics, antiques and sweets.Additional advise: "Light Festival" that is held on the 8th of December, a festival under the sky, that is held in summer theatres, The Heel Furviar - the place with the best look on the city.After the walk around Lyon, you will understand that this city really has a special charm...Being the capital of the silk weaver industry, of Three Gullies and French Opposition, Lyon is the place of the best French cooking, best museums and best theatres. Just over the last 10 years Lyon has become a great metropolis with blossom parks, skyscrapers, squares and markets, musical and another festivals - the city, where the success of the past lives in harmony with the aims of the future.
