The Eiffel Tower: An Outstanding Skyscraper

The Eiffel Tower in Paris needs no introduction. The skyscraper is the second highest structure in France and one of the most well known monuments in the world. It is one of the early skyscrapers which is visited by more than 5 million people each year. The tower is an architectural example of exposed latticework.

The tower was built in 1889 for the Universal Exhibition of Paris, celebrating the centenary of the French Revolution. The Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII of England, opened the tower. It was named after its designer, engineer Gustave Eiffel. At that time, it replaced the Washington Monument as the tallest structure in the world and it hold the title until 1930.

The structure is about 320.75 m (1052 ft.) high including the 20.75 m (70 ft.) antenna which is about 81 stories.

The metal structure of the Eiffel Tower weighs about 5,600 tonnes, and the total weight is approximately 8,300 tonnes. The tower consists of two visibly distinct parts - a base composed of a platform resting on four separate supports (called pylons or bents) and, above this, a slender tower created as the bents taper upward, rising above a second platform to merge in a unified column.

The Eiffel tower has three platforms. Souvenir shops, ‘Altitude 95’ Restaurant, post office and panoramic gallery displaying the Monuments of Paris are on the first platform. Jules Verne Restaurant, telescopes and shops are on the second platform. The top platform has a bar, souvenir shop, and the recently restored office of Gustave Eiffel.

This historical structure is the center of attraction for the tourists visiting the City of Light. The city facilitates some good accommodation amenities and pleasant ambience to the travelers. There are a number of hotels in Paris which are easily accessible from the Eiffel Tower. 

The view of the capital city of France is incredible from the tower’s three platforms, especially from the topmost.
