New York City: The Big Apple

By: B Symn

The Big Apple is a nickname of New York City and is synonymous with the cultural diversity and tourist attractions of the City. It was first popularized by John Fitz Gerald, who first used it in his horse racing column in the New York Morning Telegraph in 1921.

A decade later many jazz musicians began calling the City ‘The Big Apple’ to refer to New York City as the jazz capital of the world. Soon the nickname became synonymous with New York City replacing the older one ‘Fun City.’

A film short called ‘The Big Apple’ came out in 1938, with an all-Black cast featuring Herbert ‘Whitey’ White’s Lindy Hoppers, Harlem’s top ballroom dancers in the Swing Era. In a book published the same year, bandleader Cab Calloway used the phrase ‘Big Apple’ to mean "the big town, the main stem, Harlem." Anyone who loved the city would have readily agreed with Jack FitzGerald: “There's only one Big Apple.

That's New York."

The Big Apple has great things to offer you and your family. There are many activities and events that are children-centered and family friendly. New York City’s Coney Island is home to Astroland Amusement Park, which contains the New York City Landmark Cyclone Rollercoaster. There are also children’s museums available including the Children’s Museum of Manhattan and the Brooklyn Children’s Museum.

The Big Apple is sure to move you, no matter who are you and where you come from? It represents one of the international hubs for fashion, business, shopping and culture. Another great thing about the city is that there is always a cultural activity or event happening.

The city of skyscrapers, the city of museums, the city of the rich and famous, the city that is world class, the city that is home to the Statue of Liberty, the city that has been the backdrop of many Hollywood movies: like its character (which is vibrant and expansive), it is not easy to confine New York to a set of few words.

Talking about New York also means talking about money since hotels are no giveaways in the CityBusiness Management Articles, so if you feel like you want to enjoy the 'Big Apple' we suggest you to book your room in New York Hotels in advance.
