Attractions in Kandy

Kandy is the premier hill city of Sri Lanka. It is also a world heritage city that holds the the living record of the magnificent past of Sri Lanka. Apart from rivers, lakes, hills, valleys and waterfalls, Kandy is full of Buddhist, Hindu, Christian and Muslim shrines. There is an aura of age-old splendor, crowded markets overflowing with fruits, flowers, foodstuffs and traditional crafts.

There are some world class attractions in and around the city which are discussed below:

  • The Temple of Tooth - It is one of the most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the world. In this temple there is a tooth of Buddha. A golden canopy has been added recently.
  • Gadaladeniya Temple – A well known site, the temple was built in 1344.

    The temple is situated on a hilltop at a distance of 15 km from the town. The temple is inspired by Dravidian architecture and gives a spectacular view of the surrounding countryside.
  • Buddhist Temples - There are a number of Buddhist temples surrounding the entire Kandy. Famous among them are Malwaththa and Asgiri temples located on the shores of the lake.
  • Horton Plains National Park – The Park houses plenty of wildlife. A cliff known as World's End is a top attraction at this park.
  • Peradeniya Botanical Gardens – This garden is a paradise for nature lover which was built in the late 14th century during the reign of King Vikrama Bahu III. The best-known attraction of the garden is the orchid House, which houses more than 300 varieties of exquisite orchids.
  • Hanthana Mountains – These are spread on the outskirts of Kandy and are a source of many rivulets and streams. They are an ideal destination for the trekkers.
  • Hindu Shrines - There are four Hindu shrines dedicated to Gods Vishnu and Natha and Goddess Patthini in Kandy. Three of them are located adjacent to the Temple of ToothFree Web Content, while the fourth one is towards the town.
