Three-one-one

By: maxine greco

Three-one-one refers to the new airport regulation. You may carry liquids or gels onto the airplane in no larger than 3-ounce containers, one per person, in a one quart sized zippered clear bag. The balance of your cosmetics and toiletries must go into your baggage. This presents a whole new way of packing for those of us that travel by plane. Manufacturers are already producing a 3-1-1 bag for your convenience. A few of the companies offering this handy case are Easy-go, Travelon and Eagle Creek. They are the correct size with the correct sized containers inside. You can fill the bottles with your own brand of shampoo, mouthwash, cream rinse, etc., and be compliant with airline regulations. Some of these 3-1-1 models also have jars that you can use for a cream or gel. Yes, you can also a zip lock plastic bag. The problem with the zip lock bags is they are usually not available for your trip home. Hotel maid service will often throw the bag away, or they just get torn or unusable. The companies making these 3-1-1 bags use a strong clear vinyl that can be used over and over. They can also be wiped clean should anything spill or drip inside. Whether you use lightweight luggage in carryon size or not, it's handy to have some liquids with you on the plane.

Eye-drops, moisturizers, your contact lens solution, mouthwash, antibacterial hand wash, and chap-stick are a few of the essentials I find necessary to bring on the plane. If you are only using a carryon, you'll need to include your deodorant, shampoo, toothpaste, etc., in this 3-1-1 bag.

Packing cosmetics and toiletries in your luggage requires extra care. Men will still need to use their leather or fabric shave kit. There are many different versions of these. Some have only one outside pocket, others have multiple pockets. There are hanging versions for the back of the door in your hotel bathroom. Always try to place these items in the middle of your luggage, between your clothes. The clothing will cushion these items all around in a safety cocoon. However, it's safest to either plastic wrap the items before placing them in your kit, or double plastic bag them and then put them in your case. Baggage is not pressurized which seems to loosen even the tightest caps on liquids. There are extra steps all luggage goes through now and the extra jostling doesn't help. Before the luggage gets to the carousel, it is x-rayed first and then sent to the baggage hold of the plane.

Women have a huge array of cosmetic cases available. I prefer several smaller cases to one giant case. It's easier to pack along with your other travel accessories, and can be placed around the luggage. You want to keep these bottles and containers out of harms way where they are least likely to be banged around during handling. Most cosmetic cases are plastic lined for ease in cleaning up spills and drips. Bottles and containers will still need to be plastic wrapped or double plastic wrapped before placing them in the case. These cases should be packed in the center of your discount luggage. The clothing will cushion the items keeping them relatively safe during travel.

Larger cosmetic cases are designed to sit on the counter or hang up when you arrive at your destination. These come in many different sizes, depending on how much you are bringing. Many products can be purchased in smaller size containers for ease in packing. There are also bottle kits available that you can transfer your products into to condense size. Different lengths of trips will often require different sizes of cosmetics. There's enough of a selection available to work for your different travel requirements. Just remember the newest three-one-one requirements!
