Why you Should Head Abroad to Lift your Mood

By: Adam Singleton

The world can seem like a very different place when you compare your mood in the height of summer to how you feel in the middle of winter.

Once the festivities of Christmas and the New Year are over, it can seem like an awfully long time before there is any real chance of seeing some sun. For some people the change in weather can have a huge effect on their lives; seasonal affective disorder (SAD) leaves thousands of people feeling tired and low every single year, and even people who don't suffer from it can still find the winter months hard going.

But while you may not feel much like getting out and about, it can be the best thing you can do for yourself. Fresh air and exercise is always a great mood lifter, and it's even better if you can combine these two activities with a much needed holiday.

The great thing is that you don't need to go too far to get to a country which enjoys good weather almost all year round. Spain is a very popular choice for Brits wanting to get away from the dull cold weather, and the extra dose of sunshine is guaranteed to lift anyone's mood.

There are plenty of hotels in Costa del Sol that will provide the perfect base from which to plan a short break. One of the main advantages of staying in this area is that it's not too far to travel from home, and it's dedicated to giving people just the kind of break they need.

We all have different ideas about what lifts our mood. For some of us it might be the chance to stroll along a sandy beach, knowing that work is hundreds of miles away and there's no need to be clock watching. For others the prospect of relaxing by the pool with a good book fits the bill, stopping only long enough to have a quick swim.

While it's common to have a summer holiday each year, more and more people are seeing the benefits of escaping during the winter months as well. Sunlight has a pronounced effect on the 'feel good' hormones present in our brain, which explains why we have a tendency to feel low during the winter months.

By throwing everything in a suitcase and escaping to a warmer, sunnier country for a week or two our whole mood and outlook on life can change significantly. The Costa del Sol is the perfect venue for everyone, as it has a wide range of activities to indulge in, as well as a thriving nightlife scene.

In short, if the dismal British winter weather is getting a bit too much to cope with, perhaps it's time to experience the weather in another country for a while.
