Antwerp, the City to Buy Diamonds

"Diamonds are a girls best friend" Marilyn Monroe once said and Madonna once sang, and it might be true. "Adamas" is the Greek name for diamond, it where the Greeks who were convinced that diamonds where a splinter from the stars above, and they believed that the fire in the diamond was a reflection of the never ending love of the eternal burning flame.

Or what about Cupids arrows, the head of the arrow is a diamond, so when you are hit, there is no way back, you can’t escape the love spell, you will fall in love.

A diamond is a mineral and it exists out of carbon, one of the most considerate elements on earth. A diamond arises under very extreme circumstances, a temperature of 1300 degrees and a pressure of 80 000 kilo per square meter and about 200 kilometres under the earth ‘s crust. Nature pushes the diamonds together with volcanically lava to the surface.

One of the ways to recognize minerals is to test their hardness; talcum, plaster, calcite, fluoride, apatite, field spade, quartz, topaz, koruna and diamond.

Diamonds aren’t only used as jewellery but also in the industry for heavy machines such as cutting, grinding, polishing, drilling," When buying a diamond you will receive an original certification with it, this explains that the diamond is real and has been examined for all the elements: these are the 4 C: carat, colour, clarity and cut (shape).

Antwerp is a very well known area to cut diamonds, an Antwerp cut diamond is a guarantee for a good buy. It seems to be unbelievable but Antwerp city has a diamond history of almost 5 centuries, it began in the 15 century. More then 85% uncut diamonds reach Antwerp city and half of the worlds cut diamonds are trated in Antwerp.

The Diamond area is situated at the central station, where you use to find a lot of diamond and gold shops, but they thinned out when the Central station area had a face lift. The real Diamond area is secured, you can not just walk in unnoticed. What you definilty have to visit is Diamondland, a place (1000 square meters) that opened its doors in 1983 where you can see how diamonds are cut, craftsmen bring out the colour, clarity and the shape of a diamond.

This is one of the main reason why Antwerp has a lot of wealthy Indian people, they simply have a large influence in the diamond industry.
