Two Tips for a Perfect Road Trip

By: cameron van

Road travel can be a fun, exciting, and inexpensive way to see the country. With a little planning and some attention to details, it can also be one of the most stress free ways to enjoy some vacation time.

Research is the key when you are going to travel by road. Not only do you need to know the directions to your destination, but you also need to be aware of up to date construction. There is nothing more frustrating than being stuck on the road behind miles of construction. Many states offer construction information on their websites and today GPS units also can provide that information.

It is also a good idea to know what will be available to you on the road. If you are traveling by interstate then gas stations, restaurants, and restrooms will usually be readily available. If you are traveling by side roads (which are the ONLY way to take a road trip) then you will need to know where these services will be available. This is particularly vital when you are traveling with children. You can also use this research time to find points of interest along your route. Nothing says vacation like a visit to the largest yarn ball.

Next you need to keep a detailed list of what you are packing and where you are packing it. Keep it simple and as small as possible. Although it might be a great learning experience for the children to pack their own bags, it will be a lot less stressful (and cramped) if you pack all the clothes in one large bag. Do pack a change of clothes for each member of the family and keep it in the front of the vehicle for easy access.

Keep the list of items packed in the bag in the bag. That way you know what to put in the bag whenever you have to repack. There is never a question about leaving items behind because you can just check them off as you pack up.

You should also keep a master list of all the bags and items you pack into the car. It will give you an added sense of security (especially if you are one of those compulsive types that worry about everything).

It's really just two simple tips but they will make any road trip a more enjoyable experience. Take the time to do a little research about your destination and keep a detailed list of all your packing endeavors. Not only will your trip be a success, but you will return home with all of your items.
