Barberino Val Delsa - Accommodation in Tuscany

By: borgorosso

In the past this villages was important to Florence for merchants and pilgrims thanks to its position near the Via Cassia.

In the 1365, Taddeo di Cecco built the Spedale dei Pellegrini (Hospital for Pilgrims) near the Porta Fiorentina to help the pilgrims and the merchants that passed by.

When in the 1202 Florence destroyed the nearby village of Semifonte, Barberino Val d'Elsa became very important.

Barberino Val d'Elsa was then under the administration of the city of Florence that built the walls of the village in order to trasform it in a military garrison. Nowadays you can find two Doors, one of them, Florentine, is a remaking while the other one, Sienese, is the original one, made of stones, with an elegant gothic arch and a little church tower of the XVII century.

Also original are the difensive towers toward Valle del Drove. Very important are Palazzo Porte Pretorio and Palazzo Barberini, too.

Barberino Val d'Elsa is next to Villa Poggio Ai Merli
