The Spanish Largest Port

By: Douglas Scott

Bilbao is located in the Spanish region of Bizkaia in the Basque country. It is Spain biggest port and sixth largest city. Once famous for its chimney stacks and shipyards, Bilbao is now best known as a tourist destination. It is the heart of a metropolis with a population of more than a million people. It is the driving force of social and economic development and it is the main factor in the modernisation of the Gulf of Biscay.

It also boasts a tram and light rail system and has an public bus service and a plethora of taxi ranks. The great thing about Bilbao is that every where is walk able. You can easily walk to any place of interest.

The old part of town is a maze of winding pedestrian streets, easy to get lost. In the warren of streets you will find all types of modern clothes and high fashion boutiques along with lots of simpler shops, cafes and food markets. It lies on the other side of the river from the new, main town.

Indautxi, The Old Quarter and Ensanche are the main shopping areas. Here you will find a wide range of products in both traditional establishments, in shops selling the latest fashions and in the modern shopping centres.

A lively street market is on every Sunday under the arches of the plaza Nueva. People flock here to buy and exchange stamps and coins and it is a good place for buying books, plants, birds or fish. The Bolueta quarter also has a street market on Sundays where all kinds of things are sold at very reasonable prices, including music, clothes and shoes.

The Guggenheim is the land mark building. The Guggenheim was designed by Canadian architect Frank Gehry. It opened in 1997. It is hard to come up with new descriptions of the Guggenheim. The most extraordinary and beautiful buildings you will see anywhere it stands by the side of the river, its soft undulating lines represent, if any thing, a shipping vessel. It is clad with hundreds of silvery titanium plates which change in tone with the light of the day, and given the constantly changing. Bilbao weather the museum transforms itself on a continuous basis from morning until night. For the best view of the Guggenheim, cross to the other side of the river where you can see it in its full perspective.
