Atlanta the most populous city of the state of Georgia and is the capital. As the state capital, It is the site of most of Georgias state government. The Georgia State Capitol building, is located downtown and houses the offices of the governor, lieutenant governor and secretary of state, as well as the General Assembly.

Atlanta has the third largest lesbian and gay population of any city in the US. It has the longest parade in the Union. There is a thriving gay village a round Midtown with a large arts and cultural scene consisting of museums, theatres, symphony concerts and opera.
Midtown has some upmarket restaurants and bars, Fairlie-Poplar, Little Five Points and the West End also have some, well priced restaurants. The downtown Peachtree Centre pedestrians precinct covers 14 blocks of retail space, including dozens of restaurants, cafes, three massive hotels, and imposing office towers.
Atlantic Station, is the citys newest urban shopping district, it is a mini city of retail, built on the old Atlantic Steel site. The shopping area is set up in the style of an out door mall and includes restaurants and a movie theatre. It is now a new and popular nightspot. Lots of restaurants here have cute patios and stay open late.
The city has a well known and active live music scene. In the early 1980s, Atlanta was the home of a thriving new wave music scene.
The Georgia Aquarium opened on November 23rd is the World's Largest Aquarium. It has 8 million gallons of fresh and marine water, and more than 120,000 animals representing 500 species from around the world.
