Sheffield is a city in yorkshire, britain. it was called sheffield as the city started in a field on the River Sheaf. the population of sheffield was estimated at 525 800 in 2006, & sheffield is one of the 8 biggest english cities outside London.

It's traditionally known as an industrial city, which is renowned for producing steel. The city's steel working history was shown in the 1997 british film, The Full Monty.

Sheffield won worldwide fame throughout the nineteeth century for its production of steel. in actual fact, most innovations in the steel industry were developed in sheffield, including crucible (also the name of a theatre in the city) & stainless steel. however, world wide competition caused a decline in these traditional local industries during the seventies & eighties. at the same time, the nearby coal industry collapsed, which caused huge unemployment & affected Sheffield's population.

In recent years, Sheffield's economy has recovered &, due to its thriving music & film scene, it has become well known as a cultural centre.

As we have already discussed, Sheffield is a cultured city. This means that it has got plenty of exciting museums and galleries to explore.

One of the finest museums is Bishop House. built around 1500, Bishop House is the best preserved wood framed residence in Sheffield. it is placed at the front of Meersbrook Park and has been home to many different families over the years[/MARK Now it is open as a museum and contains some gorgeous period furniture, which gives the visitor a real taste of old england.

Sheffield has plenty to offer lovers of shopping. the city has meadowhall, which is a huge shopping mall with over 240 shops. The shopping mall was opened in 1990 & was one of the first out of town shopping malls in england.

Despite this, Sheffield city centre boasts some great stores, too. in actual fact, you'll find everything there, from high-street shops like makeover, to quirky independent shops.

Sheffield is well known for its nightlife, particularly its clubs. in fact, the super club Gatecrasher began here. However, it has night clubs that cater to other genres of music too, which include numerous indie clubs.

As well as fantastic night clubs, Sheffield also has some wonderful cocktail bars & fabulous live music venues, which means that it can cater to every taste.

Sheffield boasts great road links & can be reached easily from most huge english cities. as well as this, the city is well served by rail, with regular trains running from Sheffield train station to a vast range of destinations throughout england.

There is also an airport nearby, Doncaster Sheffield Airport. The airport is placed 18 miles from the city centre & is served mainly by budget airlines, including Thomsonfly.
