Puncak Bogor

Puncak in a Nutshell

The Presidents of Indonesia have frequented their palace in the area since the birth of the nation for good reasons. Located in a mountainous area in West Jakarta (two hours drive from central Jakarta ), it is not surprising to see many local residents themselves visiting the area for relaxation.

The mountain air, the lush greenery, the stalls upon stalls of fresh fruits and vegetables, and the friendly faces of the Sundanese greeting you make this a refreshingly cool and welcoming place to come to. Armed with the right info, a trip to Puncak can be exactly what the doctor ordered.

However having said all these, finding a refreshingly cool mountain retreat, and not getting stuck in hours of traffic getting there, is no light challenge. Reaching quality destinations in the resort town of rolling tea plantations can be an immensely refreshing escape from urban life. Puncak (the Peak) is the common name for these mountain highlands about 80 km south west of Jakarta , and the nooks and crannies and available activities up here are little known even to the most seasoned of Indonesian travelers.

Through our Puncak Travel Guide section, our writers hope to reveal some of our secrets and give you a taste of what you can expect for your off-Jakarta mountain escapes.

The first key to making this vacation enjoyable is getting out and in at the right times to avoid traffic. We cover this in the section on how to get there and back. Accommodation is tricky too – we’ve been up and down the roads plenty of times and only a handful of hotels (out of hundreds) and villas are worth visiting. We’ve shared this initial selection of quality hotels and villas with you in the following paragraphs. Perhaps the most obscure aspect of the Puncak escape is on what there is to do in the area. Horse riding, paragliding, trekking, waterfall explorations, tea walks, mountain biking, motocross explorations, and testing out your 4x4 are some of the activities that you won’t easily find on the internet or on your travels through the area, but you will find the info here. So read on, take notes, and you’ll be equipped for a delightful journey through a site of tremendous ecological importance to Mother Earth, and West Java ’s closest highlands.

Puncak is one of those places that many of us avoid, for avoidable reasons. The traffic can be horrendous, and there’s no real place where you can find out about all the various things to do in the area. Avoiding the pitfalls, and falling in the right hands to make your weekend getaway worth the risk, effort, time, and money to get out there is no easy task.
