Can you think back to the time before you started smoking? Can you remember what you thought about those who did? You probably thought that they were smelly. You probably thought that they were weak for being addicted to something. You were most likely completely disgusted by the habit and the idea of smoking. You couldn't imagine why anyone would ever want to stink like that. But not you're one of them. And don't fool yourself into thinking that other people don't feel the same way.
Other people know that you are a smoker the minute you walk past them. They can smell it on your hair. They can smell it on your clothes. They can see the tell-tale yellow of your teeth. If you've been smoking a long time then they can see the fine lines forming on your upper lip and around your mouth. There are plenty of signs. Maybe your friends don't like to hug you. They try to avoid it, because they don't want to smell you. Maybe your dentist keeps suggesting that you spend some money on some teeth whitener. Maybe even your kids are avoiding hugging you. If you smoked when they were little - that disgusting smoky scent probably reminds them of you. But now that your children are getting older and you can tell that they don't like being near it anymore. Kids can be very sensitive to smoke. Their noses aren't used to the smell. Or maybe your children don't want to get goodnight kisses anymore. What if you bent over them to say good night and they made an ugly face at you? Your children don't want your ash tray breath in their faces. And do you really want to put it there? Sure you can wash your clothes. You can even pile on cologne or perfume. But that isn't going to cover the smell for long. It follows you around like a little black cloud. It's on your hands. It's in your car. It's on your purse. Everything smells like a giant pack of cigarettes.Sure it doesn't bother you all that much. You've gotten used to the smell. Your nose has also been affected by the smoke and your sense of smell isn't as good as it used to be. But that isn't the case for your children and your other loved ones that do not smoke. They could smell it a mile away. It's like you're constantly on fire. And there's no doubt that they hate it. When you love someone, you always try to make things easier for them. You certainly do not want to be a constant source of discomfort and displeasure to them. But that's what you're doing by smoking. You're selfishly making everyone around you put up with your bad smell. They're the ones who have to deal with your nasty habit as well. And do you really want to put them through all of that?
