Chest Freezers Offer Bulk Buying Solution

By: tommy
It's a simple fact that buying in bulk can save money. But, the key to making it work is for families to buy the things they actually use and to actually be able to store them for future use. This is where a chest freezer can come in handy. Picking the right kind of freezer, however, can take a little time. The time should be more than worth the effort though.

If you want to store a large amount of meat or other freezable products, a chest freezer is often the only way to go. The little freezers offered in most refrigerators simply won't do for bulk buying. Frankly, they don't suffice for a family that's large either. Put a few packs of meat and maybe a half gallon of ice cream in one of these and the space is gone. Doesn't offer a lot of options, does it?

On the other hand, a freezer chest provides tons of space, but that space must be used wisely. When proper use is in place, the benefits of having a good freezer chest are many, especially for a busy family on the go. They include:

* An ability to properly store foods for future use. This opens the door for being able to buy up food products in bulk. There's no need to pass up on a buy one get one free sale if storage is available.

* Advanced meal planning. Busy families often make their own "frozen foods." Cooking for the entire week on a single day can save time and effort later, but storage is a must, and proper storage at that. Freezers give domestic chefs the ability to make sauces, stews and complete meals and freeze them for another night in ready to heat up packs.

* Freedom of choice. By having a well-stocked freezer, a family that stocks it right can have lots of different menu choices ready to go at a moment's notice.

When buying a freezer it's a good idea to examine available space. Since these items are typically placed in garages or basements, they don't have to look beautiful but they must do their job. Pick a freezer that matches not only your space available, but also your needs. If you don't intend to pack a giant freezer, get a smaller one.

When stocking the freezer it's important to be organized. The downside of big chest is the fact users often forget what they have in them. That big bulk purchase of pork chops won't do you any good if you don't remember they're in there. With this in mind, remember to break up big purchases into individual freezer bags or storage containers for single night uses. Clearly mark everything and don't bury things that must be used soon.

Most food items will store in a freezer for about six months, some less, so it's a good idea to know the "shelf life" of different stored foods. Write the expiration date on packages, too.

A chest freezer can be a great purchase for helping a family save money by allowing them to enjoy bulk purchases. But, it can also be a nightmare if the owner doesn't stock it properly. Label everything, create an organization system and don't forget to check the freezer for dinner ideas before running out and buying more foods. Smart users make their appliances work for them.
