Everyone wants to be happy, yet joy is elusive for most people. One reason is that people tend to expect their happiness to come from big things, like a promotion at work or a sizzling new romance. To have a truly happy, peaceful existence, however, it is necessary to find happiness in little things. Life is made up of little things, so enjoying them for all their worth is bound to make for a more pleasant life. If you could have your big dream, what would you gain from it? For instance, if your dream is to have a lot of money, what would that money do for you? It would buy comforts for one thing. It would provide the type of food you enjoy and comfortable furnishings. But what about right now? Do you get food you enjoy? Do you have a good bed, soft pillows, and a comfortable blanket? Then you already have some of what you really want. One simple thing you can do to enjoy the little blessings and comforts in your home is to keep everything orderly and clean. The easiest way to do this is to get rid of the things in your home that do not bring blessing and comfort. Most people these days are buried under needless stuff. Anything in your home that is neither useful to you nor beautiful to you needs to go. There might be a few beautiful things that you just don't have room for, too. Consider giving these away. Giving of our abundance increases our feelings of happiness in the little things. Happiness is largely a matter of being thankful. Sharing with someone in need helps us feel more thankful for the things we have. When was the last time you counted your blessings? Make a list of things that are a blessing to you. Do you live on a good road and have a car that runs? Do you have running water and electricity? Many others around the world do not have these simple amenities. Being happy and content with the small pleasures in life requires us to slow down and take a little time enjoying them. Do you have a pet? Slow down enough to sit with your animal friend and show it a bit of affection. Play ball with your dog or wiggle a string in front of your cat. And don't forget to have fun with the kids, too. Playing a simple board game can make the house ring with laughter. If your life is one of reaching for goals, where everything is always onward and upward, you will probably accomplish much. But if you don't take time to enjoy a meal with your spouse or breathe in the fresh morning air, you will be missing out on much that makes life worth living. In many ways, happiness depends on our attitudes toward the little things. Appreciate that warm hug, that cuddly blanket, and that efficient appliance, and you will find your life one characterized by happiness. |
