Walleye Fishing Lakes Perfect Recreation for Families

By: Daniel Eggertsen

Walleye fishing is one of the most popular sports in the world. It is enjoyed my men, women and children of all ages and all skill levels. It is the perfect recreation for families that want to enjoy a nice rewarding day out on the lake and for the serious angler that can't wait for a chance to reel in that trophy fish. It is fun, exciting and relaxing making walleye fishing an excellent way to spend your free time.

One reason the walleye are so sought after is because they are a challenge to catch. They are light biters so you have to be alert at all times or you will miss it when they take your bait. Once they do take the bait and you set the hook, then you will have an amazing time reeling in this remarkable species.

The walleye are distinguished by their yellowish green color on their backs and they have a white belly. They have two sets of dorsal fins and sharp teeth that are located in their jaws and the roof of the mouth. The walleye is best known for their large eyes. In fact, this is what earned them their name. They can see very well in the dark which gives them an advantage over other species. Walleye are nocturnal so they normally feed more at night but they can be caught most anytime.

Walleyes are found all over the nation in many different lakes, rivers and reservoirs but three of the most popular walleye fishing lakes found in North America are listed below.

Lake of the Woods
Lake of the Woods is a well-know lake located in Minnesota. It is so well-known for its walleye fishing that sometimes it is even referred to as the walleye capital of the world. It is a beautiful lake with 65,000 miles of shoreline to enjoy. Lake of the Woods is fed by the Shoal Lake, Rainy River and the Kakagi Lake. This lake is over seventy miles wide and more than seventy miles long and has over 14,552 islands for your enjoyment.

The main feature of this lake is the fact that it is full of walleye of all sizes making it perfect for the weekend angler and the professional. There are a variety of methods that will work great in this lake but jigging seems to be the most popular one used, followed by trolling.

Bowstring Lake
The Bowstring Lake is located in Minnesota and is one the top fishing lakes when it comes to catching walleyes. This lake is a little over 9,000 acres and has easy accessible boat ramps on three sides making it great for boaters. There are many structures in this lake that makes it the perfect environment for the walleye to grow and thrive. Most of the structures are easy to find so it makes it easier to locate the fish than it is in many of the other lakes.

In the spring the walleye can be found around the rocks, clam beds, weeds and other structures where they are preparing for spawning season. In the heat of the summer most of the walleye will move out to the humps, points and bars located in the deeper waters but they can still be found in the shallow water during the night time hours. Fishing the moving waters will provide you with a lot of success and using a jig and minnow combination is recommended.
