Atp Tennis: Canas Closes the Day Winning

This past Sunday the Argentinean Guillermo Canas closed his match successfully in the male category at the Sony Ericsson Open; while the American Serena Williams and the Spaniard Rafael Nadal also had spectacular performances.

The fight between the Latin-American players, Canas and Gonzalez was no more than breathtaking. Canas who is currently ranked fifteenth stunned the Chilean Fernando GonzÃ?lez to advance to the Masters Series tournament's quarterfinals.

The match lasted approximately two hours and 16 minutes; the Argentinean defeated the Chilean 7-6 (8/6), 7-5. Canas will be facing next the Russian Igor Andreev, who overcame the South African Kevin Anderson by 6-4, 6-7 (4/7), 6-4. Anderson had previously won a first rounder against the Serbian Novak Djokovic (world ranking # 3), which was one of the first shockers of the tournament.

The Argentinean knew how to take advantage of the 47 unforced errors of GonzÃ?lez. At the end of the game, Canas stated that it was a great game for both players, who showed a good level of play especially Fernando, as he is a difficult and powerful player.

On the other hand, Serena Williams managed to advance to the quarterfinals by winning over the Italian Flabia Pannetta (#27). The match which lasted two hours and 12 minutes ended 6-7 (6/8), 6-3, 6-2 in favor of the WTA ranked number eight player.

The youngest Williams sister is seeking her fifth Miami Masters title in the last seven years; Serena obtained three of these titles consecutively in 2002, 2003 and 2004 and her last one in her triumph over Justine Henin world's number one. If Serena manages to win again at the Sony Ericsson Open she will draw with the German Steffi Graf.

The Spaniard Rafael Nadal, second in the ranking, defeated easily the German Nicolas Kiefer 6-2, 6-4 after a brief recess due to rain showers, which affected some of the courts at the sports facility. With this triumph, the Iberian will face in the fourth round against the French Paul-Henri Mathieu, who defeated another Spaniard Carlos MoyÃ? 7-6 (7/1), 7-5.

Nadal continues to overcome obstacles, as he keeps moving forward in Key Biscayne. Right now Nadal holds a current year record of 18-5 and will seek his first title of year and the 24th of his career.

Furthermore; we have the very well recovered - the American Lindsay Davenport, who eliminated the world's number two the Serbian Ana Ivanovic 6-4, 6-2. Davenport will face the Russian Dinara Safina who defeated the Austrian Sybille Bammer 4-6, 6-1, 6-0.

Davenport is searching her title number 56 and her third of the year, after winning in Auckland and Memphis.

The oldest Williams sister Venus defeated New Zealander Marina Erakovic in two easy sets 6-2, 6-1 and she will now play against the Danish Caroline Wozniacki

Another American who has advanced to the quarterfinals is James Blake who played the French magician Santoro 6-3, 6-7 (4/7), 6-4 and will now face the Czech Radek Stepanek

World's number one Justin Henin defeated easily the Italian Sara Errani for 6-2, 6-1 and will face in the quarterfinals the Russian Elena Vesnina, who eliminated Ashley Harkleroad (6-4, 5-7, 6-4).
