Cornhole Can Be Played At Almost Any Party

By: Dave Roth

Especially in the North, but anywhere there are parties, it is possible to find the cornhole game. As a party game, a person really cannot find an easier and more enjoyable activity for people of all ages. The cornhole game is played by taking small, soft bags and throwing them at a board with a hole in it. The bags used to be stuffed with corn, which is where the game got its name. now, though, they are usually stuffed with small beans or with hard plastic pellets which will not deteriorate like organic materials will. The bags are still the same size and weight, however, and the rules of the game are basically the same. The board is made of wood or plastic, and it is compact and lightweight enough to fit in most larger car trunks. This makes it easy to transport and take to various parties and get-togethers.

In addition, most people like the cornhole game because it is easy to play and not physically strenuous. Because there are no heavy pieces or sharp edges, even very young children can play the game. The rules are also very easy to understand, meaning that anyone can figure out the game and enjoy it without getting lost in a lot of complicated rules and regulations. Too many rules make games frustrating when they should just be fun. The cornhole game is simple. The player stands a specified distance from the board. He or she then tosses the bags one at a time toward the board, aiming for the hole. If a bag goes in the hole, points are scored. If the bag lands on the board and stays there, this is also worth points, but not as many. Bags that miss the board, or that hit and fall off, do not score any points. Players continue the game until one of them reaches the number of points needed to win.

Some people even build their own cornhole boards, and the Internet has instructions for doing this. People who can work with wood and simple tools, and who can follow easy instructions, should not have a problem building their own cornhole board. The cornhole bags can also be built at home, because they are a heavy but lightweight cloth filled with beans or plastic pellets. There are also online instructions for making these, based on how much they should weigh, what they can be filled with, and what size they need to be to remain within the regulations for the game. Some people take this very seriously, and they even play in cornhole tournaments around the country. There are prizes to be won, and some players predict that the game will become more mainstream, like bowling or cup stacking.

For birthday parties, tailgating parties, barbecues, family reunions, and other get-togethers, though, cornhole cannot be beat. The ease of play and the simple rules make it a hit with both children and adults. In addition, the game is spreading from where it was so popular in the North. It is moving into other areas of the country and helping to create enjoyment at parties in more places.
