Joe Calzaghe/mikkel Kessler Supermiddle Weight Fight

By: Jeremiah Hodge

Last month on HBO, we witnessed one of the best middleweight fights of all time, with Kelly Pavlik's incredbile knockout of former champion, Jermaine Taylor. The upcoming Calzaghe/Kessler fight promises to be just as exiting.

I have been a martial artist and fan of boxing for over 40 years. I correctly predicted the win by Kelly Pavlik over Jermaine Taylor in another publication last month.

Calzaghe/Kessler will be a great fight, a must see for all serious fans of boxing. Joe Calzaghe is the longest reigning undefeated champion in the world, and is my favorite fighter. I predict that he will win, but it will be a tough fight.

Joe is not your traditional stand-up European style fighter. He can box beautifully, has very good power, and throws an incredible amount of punches per round. He has very good footwork and takes a very good punch.

However, Mikkel is also a very good fighter, and relys more on power and accuracy. He shows very few if any weaknesses.

I do pick Joe to win, because he works angles very well and I feel his speed and unorthodox style is going to give Kessler problems. Look for a great fight, with a lot of action.

I think this fight and the Pavlik/Talor fight illustrates an interesting change occuring in boxing. In many weight classes the long held dominance of the minority fighters, mostly Black and Hispanic is changing. We now see many European and Russian fighters dominating many many weight classes. Just look at the top heavyweights right now. All the best fighters are from Eastern Europe.

I have always believed you don't have to be from the inner city, or espouse the thug lifestyle to be a great fighter. You can be humble, educated and intellegent and be a fantastic boxer. This is what I like about Kelly Pavlik, Joe Calzaghe and Ricky Hatton. They are from the Jack Dempsey mold of tough, hard punching determined champions.

I happen to be a minority from the inner city and feel that these young men are not only excellent fighters, but great role models for the sport of boxing, much like Hagler, Alexis Arguello and Oscar De La Hoya. They don't do a lot of bragging. They get in that ring and fight, and that is what boxing needs.

I hope the fans enjoy this fight. My money is on Joe to win by decision. Look for a lot of action in this one.
