Losing Weight Does Not Have To Mean Losing Health

By: Robert Kokoska

At the aim of most weight loss programs are a reduction in calories. While calorie reduction is needed to lose weight, with the reduction often comes less healthy eating habits. These habits leave the body lacking in many crucial vitamins and minerals that help the body to build muscle and maintain good overall health and a high immune system. When losing weight with calorie reduction, it is important to add back those lost vitamins and minerals every day.

Vitamins and minerals work on a build up method in the body. Taking vitamin and mineral supplements while losing weight needs to be just as important as counting those daily calories. A good vitamin and mineral supplement will, at least, meet the daily requirements for all of the essential vitamins and minerals. In many cases, these supplements will exceed these RDA's for several vitamins and minerals.

Oral supplementation of vitamins and minerals during weight loss can be a tricky task. Supplements are often processed by the body very quickly and when there is an overabundance of one vitamin or another, the body expels that extra with the urine. In order to get the most of your supplements, a twice daily vitamin supplement can be chosen to keep the levels of vitamins and minerals higher in the body throughout the day.

Another choice in supplementation when cutting calories for weight loss is between a pill form and liquid form of vitamin. Many nutritionists believe liquid vitamins are absorbed more easily by the body and thus allow for better overall health. This choice is strictly up to the dieter and should be discussed with a nutritionist or family doctor.

While a general vitamin and mineral supplement is a great start for the person losing weight through calorie reduction, there are other natural supplements that are believed to aid the body in weight loss. These supplements include:

* Green Tea Extract - Metabolism

* Dandelion - Water Elimination

* Chromium - Carbohydrate Metabolism

* Ginseng - Carbohydrate Metabolism

* Caffeine - Increased Energy

* Psyllium (Fiber) - Increased Feeling of Fullness

Fiber is one of the most underutilized weight loss supplements. Fiber not only creates a feeling of fullness, but helps keep the digestive system and bowel systems healthy and moving. It is important to drink lots of water when taking a fiber supplement. Fiber is a bulk forming laxative, by nature, and needs water to work effectively in the body.

Many of these common dietary supplements are combined into weight loss pills that promise to help a dieter to lose weight more quickly. While these pills are often safe for human consumption, there have been marked cases of negative side effects when taken by patients with health problems. Speaking with your doctor before adding any supplements to your daily regime is a good decision.

Losing weight is all about cutting calories. Our food is the number one method for vitamin and mineral consumption. When the amount of food eaten is reduced, the amount of vitamins and minerals is also reduced. In order to maintain good health and adequate vitamin and mineral levels, supplementation of, at least, a daily vitamin is a healthy choice.
