How your Eating Habits Affect your Weight

By: Tina White

We all have habits that we have developed over time in regards to how we eat. Take a moment to become aware of what type of eating habits you have and consider different ways to prevent your habits from causing you problems when it comes to losing or maintaining your weight.

Unconscious - Do you eat your meals while distracted or munch on snacks without really being aware of what you are putting in your mouth? Do you watch television or engage in other activities while eating your meals? All this unconscious eating can lead to many additional calories and unwanted pounds.

Stop for a quick second before you put anything in your mouth and assess your hunger level. Also, pay attention to your satisfaction signals as you are eating your meals. Remind yourself of the weight loss goals you have set for yourself. Using a food journal will help you become more aware of these signals and will make a difference in how much you eat.

Social - Do you tend to eat and drink more when you are around friends? Do you find it hard to resist temptations when dining out, at social events, or while entertaining?

You can overcome these habits by practicing portion control while still enjoying your favorite foods. You can learn to cook healthy but delicious meals to serve to your guests while entertaining so you will not feel deprived. You can also learn to balance your food choices for social events by planning your menu around an upcoming event.

Emotional - Do you eat in response to your emotional feelings versus in response to physical hunger? Do you eat because you are bored, happy, or sad?

Before eating take a moment to ask yourself what is it that you really want right now. Chances are it is not the brownie or extra serving of mashed potatoes. Ask yourself what you really need and make every attempt to give it to yourself.

Misinformed - Do you tend to follow the latest fad diets or popular food craze that you read about in magazines or hear about on television?

Fad diets tend to keep you on the yo-yo dieting rollercoaster. Portion control, healthy food choices and exercise are the best bets overall and will help you achieve your weight loss goals. Educating yourself about these principles will help you achieve weight loss that lasts with sensible strategies that you can stick with.
