The Toyota Racing Spa Test

By: Kaye Leery

Panasonic Toyota Racing completed its week's testing in July 12 with an intensive day of running at Belgium's Spa-Francorchamps. The Toyota Spa test was rain-afflicted at the same circuit so the track was again wet for the start of the day's action. There was no rain in the morning but the skies were gray and the paved surface took a long time to dry out.

Jarno did some running to test tires in different conditions. When the track was already dried out in the sun after lunch, he successfully completed a programme that included set-up for the Belgian Grand Prix along with suspension, aerodynamics work and starts.

Jarno Trulli noted that it is nice to come back to Spa for it is the best track in the world. He recognizes that the organizers have done major work in the paddock with good looking results. The circuit has also been resurfaced and there have been modifications to the Bus Stop which have enhanced the corner. The pit entry and the pit exit are a bit narrow but he generally liked what has been done. He added that one would never know what weather to get there and it is always difficult to test under conditions like they have experienced in the test.

He continued that they went out for a few runs on the damp track in the morning. However, the racing line soon became inconsistent. It was dry in the corners but wet on the straights which made them tough to carry out much useful comparative work. He also said that they have not focused on lap times but the car felt good. So he concluded that it has been a positive day and he looks forward to going back for the race.

Pascal Vasselon, Senior General Manager for Chassis, said that Spa is a peculiar track so the testing they have done this week has been concentrated firmly on the race there in September. He commented that the unsettled weather has been a hint of the range of conditions that they could face during the race weekend itself. So they have been very careful to collect data in every single type of weather that they have experienced in the last three days.
