Mud Flaps: Jeeps Protection in the Trail

By: John Garett

Mud flaps are one of the exterior accessories installed on a Jeep that make the vehicle apt for trail driving. Also called mud guards and splash guards, the Jeep mud flaps are rubber mats attached on each wheel niche of the vehicle to keep away the mud on the trails. Jeep mud flaps shield the vehicle from mud and other debris flung out by the vehicle's tires. Most Jeep mud flaps are made from high-grade rubber, while some are made from metal and durable plastic. It is essential that both rear and front tires be outfitted with a set of Jeep mud flaps, as road debris tend to get thrown by the tires and likely to cause scratches and other damages not only to the Jeep itself but to the nearby vehicles as well.

Mud flaps are rather easy to install. Just a few bolts or screws are enough to hold the top of the mud flap firmly in place while the bottom edge hangs and bends to deflect the road debris. With a set of , mud and slush and other road debris are kept from the vehicle's wheel. The tougher the mud flaps installed on a Jeep, the lesser the likelihood of the vehicle incurring paint damage and corrosion problems. Although they are commonly called mud flaps, mud guards and splash guards, the Jeep rubber mats also help deflect loose gravel and excessive rainwater. They provide year-round protection, and are especially useful during heavy rains and other extreme driving conditions. Like other aftermarket vehicle accessories, the Jeep mud flaps have now become a popular means of car customization. Most automotive supply stores sell a wide variety of Jeep mud flaps featuring designs from cartoon characters to famous logos, artworks and quotations similar to those used on bumper stickers. There are even some companies who actually manufacture custom Jeep mud flaps with their name and contact information on it.
