Water Powered Cars! Whats the Science Behind the Hype?

There has been a lot of hype recently, not just online, but in the motoring press and even on TV, about Water Powered Cars. This sounds like it must be some sort of con - surely a car can't run on water? The reality of the situation is that of course a car can't run on water alone, but that doesn't mean it's a scam either. Maybe the "Run Your Car On Water!" headlines are a bit optimistic, but it's a cast-iron fact that by adding water to the gasoline going into your car or truck engine, you can reduce your fuel consumption dramatically. At first glance, it doesn't seem to make sense that water will make a combustion engine work better - after all, you can put a fire out with water! But do you remember any of your chemistry from High School? Water is H2O, which means 2 parts Hydrogen to 1 part Oxygen. Now most people know that Oxygen is necessary for combustion, and that Hydrogen is extremely flammable - remember the Hindenburg Airship? In water, the Hydrogen and Oxygen are molecularly combined into an inert liquid, but if the two elements are released, you have a highly combustible mixture known as HHO, or Brown's Gas. Feed it into your engine with the gas, and you have a far more efficient fuel.

Tests have shown that adding HHO to the gas going into your engine can achieve increases in fuel economy of around 45% - 65 % - indeed some tests have claimed to have halved fuel consumption.

Splitting the H2O into HHO sounds like you might need a chemical plant to achieve it, but in fact, everything you need is freely available at your local hardware store or auto parts supplier. And it's not expensive either - depending on where you shop, you should easily be able to get everything for $50 - $100.
