RAF - the starting point
When Alyn Owen left school, he realised his childhood ambition to join the RAF as an Aircraft Technician. While undergoing his extensive training, he gained work ethics and high standards that would remain with him throughout his life. During his time in the RAF, Alyn was responsible for maintaining his allocated aircraft in peak condition and readiness for all eventualities. Indeed, through the Falklands conflict, he found out what hard work really was when he undertook a 12 hour a day shift for 6 weeks without stopping in order to ensure the front line troops received the support and training that they needed.
Car Craft - what next
Alyn's career took a new direction, when he was looking for a company to carry out an on site refurbishment for his car wheels. He says "It was impossible to locate someone who could do this work on site". Alyn, with a longstanding interest in automotive machinery of all kinds saw that this gap in the market, could allow him to fulfil a further ambition - that of working for himself. So he set up Wheelhealers based in Rugby which covers a wide area including Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Derbyshire, West Midlands, Worcestershire, Northamptonshire, Warwickshire, and Oxon.
A new business
Alyn provides a mobile service to sort out all the minor scrapes, scuffs and dents that occur on a car. Whether your alloy wheels have been kerbed or a supermarket shopping trolley scuffed your bumper, he will resolve the problem at a place and time convenient to you. The paint finish of the car is matched exactly so the repair is unnoticeable.
He has continued to add to his business, he says "I wanted reversing sensors fitted to my Wheel Healers' van and, again, could not find a local company to do it so I added that to my company profile"
The next developments are likely to be tracker systems (I want to fit one to my touring caravan) and Hands-Free phone installations (I've just fitted one to my tow car.
Repairs can be made to small scuffs and scratches on the bumpers and bodywork, as well as restoring alloy wheels. Also interior repairs can be made for the dashboard and seating within the car.
Alyn saw the need for the public to have easy access to information and to be able to find local cosmetic repair technicians and joined with Look4carcare (www.look4carcare.co.uk) in order to promote cosmetic car repairs, which was launched this year. He says "I can see the benefit in a one-stop-shop for all types for car repairs and have already received several firm leads".
Alyn is not a man to sit still, despite his successful and growing business, he misses the interaction with young people, especially disaffected youngsters, and is thinking about doing some supply teaching for a couple of days a month to give a little back into the community.
