Mx Pants - Keeping Your Legs Safe and Warm

By: Steve Odine

Selecting a pair of MX pants can seem to be a simple choice. Locate some pairs that fall within your price range and pick the best looking ones, right? Except it's not quite that simple. Dirt bike pants come in many different cuts, styles and sizes. And there are other qualities to consider, such as durability, heat resistance, resistance to scraping and scratching and more. We'll run down the qualities you should consider when choosing a pair of pants to help you arrive at a wise choice.

MX Pants Safety
Pants safety comes down to three factors: what they are made of, what type of incorporated safeguards they have, and how well they accommodate added protection.

Pants are offered in various fabrics, each one having its unique pros and cons. If you are looking for protection from scrapes, leather is a good decision, although it can be quite warm. Perforated leather lets more airflow, but is not as durable. Cordura combines breathability and abrasion resistance, but the drawback is its stiffness. Probably the strongest material for pants is Kevlar, despite its high price.

Additional protection, by way of knee or hip protectors, is accessible in a variety of pants. When you see these described as "panels", it indicates that strengthened fabric is incorporated to provide additional durability. This additional protection still may not meet your needs, though. If you wear additional knee protection, look for pants that are made to hold them.

Safety is obviously one of the most important factors in selecting so you should spend more time on this one.

Fit
You'll want pants that provide an adaptable, flexible and comfortable fit.

A snug fit is important because you don't want material flapping about and slowing you down. Spandex is a good option for this, although Spandura provides the hold of Spandex with several of the protective properties of Cordura.

You'll want a flexible fit so you can move freely without being held back by your pants. search for flexible stretch panels within all joints that flex as you move.

Ensure pants have an adjustable fit since you might want to swap in safety panels depending on weather conditions. Look for an adjustable waistband and cuffs to provide extra room for safety gear like a midsection belt and boots.

Durability of Dirt Bike Pants
Because you may spend a good sum of money on some pants, you'll want them to last. Search for pants that provide triple stitches on seams. This allows the pants to sustain some amount of damage without ripping. Make note of the kind of fabric used in the rear and the knees -- these two areas receive the heaviest strain so are most vulnerable to tearing.

Airflow
Air circulation normally does not go hand-in-hand with safety. The more durable the fabric, the better protection it provides at the expense of being more warm. Pants will often contain strategically placed air flow vents that allow for cooling without sacrificing protection. Some pants feature webbed panels. Spandex and Cordura also offer this type of breathability.

Motocross Pants Style
Of course, the pants must look good as well. Don't forget to compare the color scheme of your pants to your bike. Are they a good match? Is there other gear that needs to be considered, like boots or a jersey? When you are off your bike, will your pants still be appropriate? If so, you won't need to hurry to put on other clothes when you dismount. Perhaps consider getting pants with removable legs so they can be converted into shorts. Although they won't be as safe, they will be more practical after your ride, especially when the weather is iffy.

Other Factors
The factors above are perhaps the most critical to look at when choosing Dirt bike pants. Yet there are still others as well. search for pants that are lightweight so you're not held back by your gear. Consider the pockets -- are you trying to carry a few essentials when you travel? If so, you'll require a few of those.

Youth Motocross Pants
A quick word about dirt bike pants for the kids: The same factors as above apply for youth pants as well as for adults. Pay close attention to sizing, obviously, because kids do grow quickly! And you may want to prioritize safety to a greater extent instead of styling. That should be a possibility nowadays, because many pants are now produced in children's sizes as well as adults'.
