Diamond Engagement Ring - a Buyers Guide

By: John Marks

Buying a diamond engagement ring for your loved one is not something that you do every day. So it's worth considering some of the main points that will help you on the way to the perfect purchase. Here are some central issues to consider:

Perhaps the first thing to do when shopping for a diamond engagement ring, is to try and find out what your loved one would actually like to wear on her finger. Naturally you can ask her, but if you want to keep your gift (and proposal) a romantic surprise, consider doing a little detective work. Take her shopping at a mall or another location where you know that jewelers are located, and see if her eye catches anything specific. Ask a close friend of hers if they have discussed engagement rings, and whether she has expressed a particular preference.

Pay attention to the diamond jewelry that she owns and wears: Does she like subtle or showier items? Her clothing style might also give you some hints as to whether to aim for a diamond engagement ring that is highly contemporary, classic, or perhaps even an older style: antique engagement rings are going through something of a renaissance.

You also need to take into consideration the hand shape of your bride to be. Long slender hands suit bold showy diamond cuts, and short delicate hands, more intricate and subtle designs.

The next thing to think about is your budget and whether you are going to purchase a complete diamond engagement ring, or, alternatively, to purchase the diamond ring and setting separately. The latter option will give you many more possibilities, and enable you to put together something unique.

In terms of the shape of the diamond, the round cut is still the most popular choice. However, there are other shapes to choose from, including pear, oval, marquise and emerald, or even fancier shapes, such as hearts and triangles.

The ring itself can be made of gold, white gold, or platinum. Again, the color of the ring should match your bride's tastes and preferences, as well as the diamond that will be set in it.

Finally, remember to enjoy the shopping process, and keep focused on the excitement that your bride to be will experience, when she says 'yes!', and slips that special diamond engagement ring on her finger.
