Points to Consider When Relocating in Europe

By: Elisha Burberry

If you are thinking of moving to a different European country, it's easy to get caught up in the romance of it all. But it's wise to consider the practicalities of moving before you take the plunge.

Many people go on holiday to European countries such as Bulgaria and enjoy their stay so much they start thinking about living there full time. Even before their holiday ends they are looking at houses advertised with estate agents in Bulgaria, and planning a return trip to actually start looking at properties.

But it's essential to think through the whole process of moving to another country before doing anything. First of all you need to think about whether or not you could continue in your current career. If you work for a big company you may be able to get a transfer to your chosen country, so it's best to ask your manager for advice on whether this is a possibility.

If this isn't possible or you simply want to change careers completely, it's wise to find a suitable position before you make the move, so that you know you have a job to go to. You should also find out what the cost of living is in the country you are intending to move to. You may find that when you have liquidated your assets in your own country, they can go much further at your destination.

For example, if you sell your home and car and you are looking at property for sale in Bulgaria, you could find that your total budget goes a lot further in Bulgaria than it does at home. Get an idea of what everyday items, utilities and requirements are likely to cost, and figure out how big a property you could afford.

You also need to think about how you will stay in touch with friends and relatives. Many people who move to another country invite their families over for holidays each year, as well as going back to their old home once in a while to catch up with people they don't see as often.

There is also the language barrier to consider. Try and take an evening or home study course before you move abroad, so that you will be able to converse with the locals as soon as you move in. This will help you to fit in more easily right from the start.

In short, moving to a different European country can be a wonderful way to broaden your horizons - so long as you are prepared for making a big change. Prior planning is the best way to make sure everything goes smoothly, both before, during and after the move itself. Remember you are not just moving home - you are embracing a whole new lifestyle.
