Growing Competition for Vacation Rental Homeowners

By: Marie R. Feguson

Several homeowner's of vacation rentals have reported increasing difficulty in finding qualified renters. With the rapidly growing number of vacation rentals on the market, competition is on the rise.

But, don't get too discouraged. There is good news. The number of travelers, including singles, couples and families has increased over the past five years. And let's not forget about the babyboomers. As they reach their retirement age, they are spending a lot more time traveling.

Most vacationers are realizing there is more value in staying at a vacation home rental and are making it their number one choice as they continue to travel. Some of the essentials they are looking for can only be found in privately owned vacation homes. For example, they have the option of cooking their own meals instead of spending more for restaurant meals. And, they have more room to enjoy each other while traveling with family and/or friends, but still being under one roof. Enjoying board games in the family room with friends is another pleaurable event you can have when renting a vacation home instead of staying in a hotel.

Marie Ferguson, author of Breaking all the Rules: How to Rent Your Vacation Home believe's in raising the scales to higher levels of quality and comfort for both the homeowner and their guests. She advises homeowners to challenge the "old ideas" that homeowners once believed in. Think outside of the box. Just because most landlords are telling you not to do anything fancy to your rental property because renter's may damage it, doesn't mean they are correct in their way of thinking. Find ways to reduce the risk factors when you are decorating your home. Look for new answers to the many concerns of both the experienced and "newbie" homeowners regarding issues, such as, marketing, advertising, housecleaning, agreements, rules and regulations.
