I love the scent of cinnamon (Kayu Manis in Bahasa); it warms me and gives me a fuzzy feeling. I believe you might find one in your kitchen rack, used to add flavour and fragrance to both food and drinks. That might be the reason why this private villa and spa is called Kayu Manis - it hopes to leave you with that warm, familiar feeling.

There’s something alluring about Kayu Manis Ubud. A visit takes you back in time as its peaceful surroundings, alang-alang thatched roofs, teakwood furnishings, and tamarind soda (their welcome drink) come together to make you feel as if you were living in a Balinese traditional village back in the 70s. Only 9 private villas were constructed on the approximately 6,000 square meter property — obviously made with honeymooners in mind. Villa staffs are dressed in white outfits, symbolizing courteous and immaculate service. All villas, both on the right and left side, can be accessed via a small path with high walls, giving privacy to each guest. You may spot several cinnamon trees, which is said to have been specially imported from Malaysia. Every villa is appointed with themed interiors such as Modern, Bali, Palembang, Java and Oriental, among many others, making each unit distinctive in their own way.

Seeing one of the villas gave me ideas on how my own dream house should look like.  Each villa has its own private swimming pool, complete with a spacious tropical garden and a barbecue area. It also has a living room and a dining room furnished with its own crockery, utensils, microwave, refrigerator, cooking stove, and a host of other conveniences. Because the privacy of its guests is the foremost priority, activities are limited. There is the Dining Corner, a Thai restaurant providing authentic Thai dishes and desserts from breakfast to dinner. Since Kayu Manis Ubud’s guests are mostly Japanese and Taiwanese travelers, the rates are  slightly higher than the average, starting from US$ 400 going up to US$ 800++.
