Pondok Indah Jakarta
by: Dina Indrasafitri

The Pondok Indah district is a name to drop, if you're looking to generate awe and/ or envy. Jakarta dwellers are familiar with this place and what it represents. Whether positive or negative, there's always something to say about the Pondok Indah district and its residents.

Having flourished from the 1970s, the area became noted for its Beverly Hills-esque appeal. Its exteriors boasts of its occupancy by Indonesia 's upper echelons and proclaims this affluence with bravado. Massive two or three-storied houses form an imposing row in the wide streets decorated with palm trees.

Nevertheless, the district is not just another pretty face with nothing in it. Although located quite a distance from Jakarta 's business centers, it is still a favourite amongst the expat community. Especially since the area is nicely completed with a number of international schools such as the Jakarta International School and the Japanese International School . Entertainment is also just a stone's throw away, with many renowned clubs taking up residence over there.

The Pondok Indah Mall or ‘PIM', one of the first giant ‘malls' in Jakarta is located there. With a recent addition of PIM 2, this shopping centre is your one-stop fun factory. You can expect to find almost anything in PIM and the adjoining PIM 2, with the latest in fashion being displayed there and a wonderful collection of imported books in the Kinokuniya bookstore. Prices follow the usual upscale mall standards, of course.

The PIN alley at the Metro Pondok Indah Street , provides the perfect weekend alternative. Not keen on striking the pins? There are other options for your fun day out, for this alley claims itself as an all-in entertainment center. Pool tables plus a restaurant and bar on the second floor will give your night a chilled-out cum exciting twist. But be aware also that the ‘one-stop entertainment' has its fair share of constant blaring music and crowds of youth. It's still ideal for some unadulterated family day out though. Just a walk away from the alley, you can satisfy your need for speed at the Red Line Speedy Karting Go-Kart tracks.

On clear days, pack up your golfing gears and tee off at the Pondok Indah Country Club with its unique and excellently designed golf course. Notch up on your health with their other facilities such as the fitness center, the swimming pool and the special sports section for children. The club also has Bugs Café, a decent-enough place to either chill out or rock out while listening to live bands.

The Hotel Kristal in Tarogong Raya Street will give your temporary stay there a boost of luxury. The four-star stunner features several penthouses and exclusive apartment services. Featuring a diving equipment shop and diving tour-arranger called Kristal Klear and a cozy, no-nonsense bar bearing the whimsical name of ‘Satu Lagi', which translates as ‘one more', you will be able to get the best of Pondok Indah.

If a long term stay is what you have in mind, then you can rest assure knowing that there are also a number of apartments available for choosing . Among them are the Golfhill Terraces Apartment, the Poins Square Apartment, and the aforementioned Le Crystal Serviced Residence at the Hotel Kristal.

Pondok Indah area certainly doesn't stop at its glitzy image. Save from its annoying traffic jams, it is truly a heaven of residence. You know that if you have it, you should flaunt it. No matter what they say, class doesn't just end with polite manners.
