Treading The Blok M Shopping Path
by: Dina Indrasafitri

No matter how many ‘supermalls’ claw their way up to the hearts of Jakarta shoppers, there’s always a special place for the living colors of Blok M. Since years ago, this area has been the main destination for those looking for a fun shopping experience.

However, due to the huge space that this mall takes up, it’s best to be sure of where you want to head when you go there. Choices range from the hot and air-conditioned, the packed noisy side and the more tranquil areas. Whatever your choice is, you are bound to be surprised by the extremes that this place packs under one name.

If peaceful and organized shopping is what you are looking for, then head to the Pasaraya Grande located just outside the exit of Blok M Bus Station. Here, you can find almost anything within a relaxing atmosphere and lots of space. From bedding looms to art supplies, the variety will certainly make your shopping easier and more enjoyable. A supermarket and hardware store are conveniently located in the basement, so there’s no need to look far for your home or garden decorating needs elsewhere. The Pasaraya Grande also boasts the exclusive MPX Grande Theatre.

Step outside the Pasaraya Grande and you will be greeted by a long, packed up stretch of road heading towards the Bus Station entrance across it. That long road preserves many hidden secrets of Jakarta ’s followers of style, from skin-tight jeans to sassy tops, all housed under the roof of the Melawai Plaza . That’s right, this is where the fashionistas head to for their slick-looking outfits with jaw-dropping low prices. Perfect for those who wants to be trendy without putting a strain on their budget. But be warned that stamina is needed before you can rummage through the treasures here.

But this already-interesting plaze is nothing compared to Blok M Mall, which is located approximately across the Plaza. Believe us when we say the images you conjure of the malls of Kelapa Gading or Pondok Indah in your brain will not do it justice. You are heading towards a different dimension altogether. The Blok M Mall is located underground, beneath the roaring buses going back and forth the Bus Terminal and the outdoor stalls above. Not many interesting things to find here, only ordinary clothing items and other tidbits with lower prices. But it saved by its close proximity and easy access to one of the Bus Station’s directional channels.

Near the Melawai Plaza is Aldiron Plaza . This plaza is one of the first ‘modern’ shopping centers ever to be built in Jakarta and was very famous during the eighties. Now its fame is tragically dimmed with rare mentions in the Jakarta shopping scene. Ironically, people are now interested in the roadside market in front of it, selling various traditional Indonesian snacks. If you want to get on the lighter side of Indonesian food, you’ll have a great time munching up the addictive delights. However, the stalls are only open from dawn up to 9 AM so you better be an early bird!

At the end of the road, you can find the Blok M Plaza. The Blok M Plaza leans more towards the ‘social’ or ‘entertainment’ side, rather than the shopping side. These factors make it more popular for the youths rather than serious adult shoppers. The Blok M Plaza has features such as a middle-ranged cinema, a number of ‘theme shops’, ranging from perfume to collectibles, photo booths, and a lot of restaurants. The whole plaza is air conditioned and well-facilitated, yet sometimes the amount of shoppers or leisure-seekers can be too overwhelming.

Hitherto, these are the known and explainable parts of Blok M area for your shopping pleasure. As for the lesser-known, we leave it up to you to explore. After all, what’s life without a little adventure?
