Computers and Space Exploration

Computers have been used for a long time to perform tasks that no one could. The best example is when we use computers to do repetitive tasks or other requirements that need fast response with calculations.

There has always been a computer involved when we made a major breakthrough in science or any other field and why astronomy would be any different. The latest discoveries in astronomy have been made using telescopes and computers that render the images that are taken with the telescope.

Crystal clear images have been taken from distant galaxies and then they have been digitally transformed so that they could be understood by scientists. Without computer generated images, we would have never seen what lies beyond the corners of our own solar system because regular telescopes can't penetrate the vast space between galaxies. Telescopes have been equipped with special chips that can render images so that they can be transmitted back to our researchers to be analyzed.

Even if scientists don't understand some astronomical processes, they still turn to computers to run different scenarios based on what they already knew and the laws of physics. Models are created in 3D and then analyzed so that they can be properly understood.

Space exploration has had a lot to gain since computers have been developed. When we used to study the skis with lens telescopes and the naked eye we didn't discover any new and exciting thing. After computers, the entire astronomical community had only to gain. The major breakthroughs and theories that have been published, are all based on computer analysis of the images gathered by space satellites. We owe computers the knowledge that we have now and probably the next to come.
