Boston eliminated Detroit, one of its stronger rivals, in the East Conference Final and now will be facing its NBA archenemy, for nothing less than the NBA title.

Paul Pierce scored 27 points; Ray Allen added 17 and Kevin Garnett had 16 points, during the past Friday, in the sixth game of the conference finals, in which the Celtics defeated for 89-81 the Detroit Pistons.

Boston that faced Detroit many times in the 1980's will play now against the Los Angeles Lakers, in one of the greatest league classic games. "It's kind of surreal", said Garnett. "Probably hasn't even hit me yet because we haven't slept in about four days, going on five days now. Going to the Finals, I'm just hoping to get some sleep".?

The Pistons were eliminated in its court for the first time in six years. In that period, Detroit arrived at the conference finals in each year and conquered the title in the 2004.?

"This is really tough", commented Chauncey Billups, who scored for Detroit 29 points, which was his greatest contribution during the playoffs. "We had it, and we didn't get over the hump."

Boston arrived at the series without a victory away in the post-season and conquered victory twice as the visitor in Detroit to win the complicated series. The team with the best record in the NBA also obtained a deficit in the fourth period for the first time in seven opportunities in the playoffs.?

The Celtics coach, Doc Rivers, affirmed that it was possibly the best thing it could happen to them, because now they can actually say they went through stuff but they're still standing.

After playing two seventh games, the Celtics will have a necessary rest to receive Kobe Bryant and the Lakers on Thursday.

Apart from for Billups' 29 and Richard Hamilton's 21 points, the rest of the team did not make the expected effort, particularly Rasheed Wallace, who scored only four points in which could've been his last game with the Pistons; as well for the coach Flip Saunders.?

After being with the even scoreboard in 58, Detroit finalized the third period with an offensive of 10-2 and achieved their first advantage since halfway of the initial period.?

Just when it seemed that the Pistons took the leadership of the game with an early advantage of 70-60 in the fourth period, the Celtics scored nine points in less than two minutes and they launched an attack of 19-4 that put them ahead for a 79-74.?

Billups converted a triple that carried Detroit to 83-79 with 2:24 minutes left, and then the Piston wasted the opportunity of reducing more the difference. Tayshaun Prince trapped a lost ball, after Boston failed a basket, and when raised the ball was surprised by James Posey, who came from behind and stole it away from him.?

Pierce made two free shots, the ones that put up the Celtics for six points at a minute and a half of the end. The Pistons failed some 3-points shots and could not take advantage of the two free shots that Garnett failed when they were 36 seconds away from the end the game.

The Pistons were eliminated at home for the first time since Pierce helped Boston to do it in the 2002 post-season second round.
