Why We All Play a Small Role in Homeland Security

by : Ron Mcbride

Homeland security is something that was really given very little thought, before they terrible terrorist act on 9-11-01. Homeland security is defined as governmental actions designed to prevent, detect, respond to, and recover from acts of terrorism, and also respond to natural disasters.

Homeland security is something that really is designed to make all of us feel safer. Unfortunately we live in a society where we will never ever totally be safe. But thanks to this agency we have a better chance than we did a few years ago.

However, there are things we can do as individuals to help protect our own homes in our own land. In this article we'll take a look at a few things we can do to be more aware of what is going on around us and act as Homeland security agents in our own right.

1. First of all, everyone needs to be aware of what is going on around them. If you're lucky enough to live in a neighborhood where neighbors watch out for each other you can carry this on into the workplace and everywhere that you are every day.

It is no longer acceptable for us to just go about our daily lives and not be aware of what is going on around us. The days of walking away and letting someone else deal with it is over. We have to take care of what appears to be a potential problem before it becomes a larger one.

2. If you see something suspicious. Check it out. This does not mean putting yourself in danger, but it does mean helping out a neighbor if they need it or notifying police or authorities if you see something that doesn't seem right. Today we live in a very mobile society. All of us have cell phones equipped with speed dial, text messaging and even the Internet.

We can quickly reach an authority, or local sheriff department, or the police department if we need to on a moments notice. Unfortunately this is what it has come to in our society here in the United States and around the world.

3. Another thing that it is extremely important is that you prepare yourself and your family for future terrorist attacks. This can include installing surveillance equipment, equipment on your home, or your place of business. It should include purchasing gas masks to wear in case of a nuclear attack.

This is a few ideas on why we all play a small role in homeland security today. We all just need to do what we can even if it means just playing a small role on a daily basis.
