Chinese New Year is also known as Lunar New Year as well as The Spring Festival. During CNY, these are the common taboo's and superstitions;

 CNY Taboo

 

1. Place red packet under the pillow for kids who stay up late for parents longevity....as token to return their longevity.

2. Never eat porridge on the first day of CNY, else for the rest of the year, it will rain whenever you want to go out

3. The first meal on Chinese New Year should be vegetarian food. Consuming meat and slaughtering animals on that day is considered bad.

4. Haircuts are to be avoided as this will cut/snip away good fortune.

5. Any debt has to be paid off before Chinese New Year. Avoid lending or borrowing anything.

6. A broken chopstick signifies breaking of relations.

7. The main door and windows of houses has to be kept wide open till the next morning to usher in good luck.

8. Teens to stay up as late as they can at home to increase longevity of their parents. (reason why firecrackers will be up all night)

9. Do not sit by the main door to avoid blocking the flow of good luck into the house.

10. Do not sleep in late till the afternoon. This signifies that the person will be lazy throughout the whole year.

11. Do not wake anyone up on Chinese New Year. It signifies that the person will be hurried all year round.

12. There should not be any ongoing renovations on the first day of CNY. 'Nails' in Cantonese sounds like 'death', so avoid nailing anything.

13. Releasing any birds, fish or animals kept in captivity is said to bring one good luck.

14. Avoid visiting graveyards or hospitals during this festive period.

15. Never hand out ang paos in white color envelopes/packets. Bring two oranges when visiting. This indicates that you are bringing wealth to the family.
