3 Things You Can Do With Your (Leftover) Mandarin Oranges
Now that the Lunar New Year is almost over, it’s time to do away with the extra mandarin oranges at home. Here are some things you can try out this weekend. Have fun and make it a family project!
Orange and Pineapple Infused Water
Fruit infused waters are all the rage right now. We all want to be healthier to work and play harder. It is common knowledge that hydrating is essential to good health and infused waters make drinking water all that more fun and colorful. Try your hands at making a jug of your very own fruit infused water with our easy to follow recipe.
Materials needed
Mandarin Oranges, sliced
Complementary Citrus Fruit (Optional, for added flavour)
Water
A jug
Instructions
1. Fill the jug up with water
2. Place your sliced mandarin oranges into it.
3. Add a complementary fruit to the mix. E.g. Pineapples, cubed
4. Add some crushed ice in and voila, orange & pineapple infused water!
Fresh Mandarin Orange Jam
A fresh jar of homemade mandarin orange jam will be the perfect spread atop a crisp, toasted bread. Spread the love and give away some of them as little tokens of appreciation to your aunties and uncles as gifts for the red packets you received.
Materials needed
4 Mandarin Oranges, peeled and cut into chunks
800g of sugar
½ Lemon
80ml liquid fruit pectin
3 cups water
3 – 4 jars
Instructions
1. Blend chunks of oranges and lemon into pulp. Ensure that the seeds are removed.
2. In a bowl, combine the chopped oranges and sugar; let stand for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
3. Combine the pectin and water; add to orange mixture, and stir for 3 minutes.
4. Pour into sterilized 1/2-pint jars with lids, filling to within 1/2 inch of the top; cover.
5. Set at room temperature for 24 hours; then refrigerate.
6. Will keep refrigerated up to three weeks-or freeze for longer storage.
Homemade Citrus Cleaner
Keep your home spick and span, and smelling citrus-fresh with this aunaturale homemade cleaner! Use it to clean the stove and sinks and feel good in knowing there aren't any harmful additives you don't know about.
Materials needed
Mandarin Orange Peels
White Vinegar
Water (optional)
Airtight glass container
Spray bottle
Instructions
1. Fill your airtight glass container up with your leftover mandarin peels.
2. Pour white vinegar into the container. Fill it all the way up to the brim.
3. Write the date on the jar and let it sit for 2 weeks.
4. In two weeks, the vinegar should be yellowish in color and emit a strong citrus scent.
5. Strain the peels and keep the citrus-vinegar concentration.
6. Dilute concentration with water. You may use a 1:1 ratio.
7. Pour into a spray bottle and use.
