About
Biopolis is an international Research and Development (R&D) centre located at one-north, Buona Vista, which is dedicated to the biomedical sciences. This purpose-built biomedical research hub is where researchers from the public and private sectors are co-located. History
Conceptualised in April 2001, Biopolis was developed and completed (Phase 1) by JTC Corporation (JTC) in June 2004 at a cost of S$500 million. Phase 1 of the Biopolis comprised a seven-building complex linked by sky-bridges and offered a built-up area of 185,000 square metres. Out of these 7 buildings, Chromos and Helios are dedicated to biomedical players from the private sector whereas the other 5, namely Centros, Genome, Matrix, Nanos and Proteos, house the biomedical research institutes of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), Singapore's lead agency for scientific research and development.Phase 2 of the Biopolis was completed in October 2006, yielding an additional 37,000 square metres of built-up area between 2 new buildings, Neuros and Immunos, which house research on neuroscience and immunology respectively. Industrial
Currently, occupancy at Biopolis Phase 1 is 95 per cent. It is home to 2,000 scientists, researchers, technicians and administrators. Biopolis Phase 3 is expected to be launched in 2007. Within Biopolis, there are 8 shops, 4 restaurants, 4 cafes, a 300-seater food court, a fast food restaurant, a pub and a childcare centre that are open to the general public. Residential
Biopolis is further surrounded by nearby HDB housing estates in Buona Vista and Dover. There were plans to build a hotel nearby and a large number of private condominium units but the latter was debated upon as there was public concern over the need for such developments. Nonetheless, one-north Residences will still provide a highly attractive residential offer for people working in Biopolis. Transportation
The nearest Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) train station to Biopolis is the Buona Vista MRT Station (EW21), where a free shuttle service is available and goes straight into Biopolis.
