About
Commonwealth is a sub-zone of the Queenstown district. Akin to many other sub-zones in the vicinity, Commonwealth is chosen for the Selective En bloc Redevelopment Scheme (SERS). Blocks 57, 61, 67 & 73 on Commonwealth Drive are representative of the affected blocks under said scheme.
Commonwealth Avenue is considered a high-risk area prone to high levels of rainfall. The Public Utilities Board (PUB) recognised the problem and doubled the number of drainage holes along the Avenue, but these measures were still unable to stop the floods along Commonwealth Avenue in January 2007. As such, PUB announced a S$12.8 million canal to be built at Commonwealth Road which is expected to be completed by the end of 2007.
History
Commonwealth is, obviously, named after the Commonwealth of Nations ( CN ), a significant representation of Singapore 's history as a British colony. Since the nation's independence in 1965, Singapore became part of the CN.
Residential
Commonwealth comprises mainly HDB flats. Blocks 57, 61 and 67 to 73 Commonwealth Drive and Blocks 50 to 54 Tanglin Halt Road had been selected for SERS and poised for demolition so as to pave the way for Studio Apartments aimed at the elderly. There are no private condominiums in the district.
Industrial
Haw Par Technocentre is situated at 401 Commonwealth Drive and houses companies such as Epson and Ford cars.
There is a 1.1 hectare JTC Corporation land up for long-term tenure located at the junction of Commonwealth Avenue and Commonwealth Drive.
Transportation
Commonwealth is served by a Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) train station by the same name. Commonwealth MRT Station (EW20) is 3-storeys high and has 2 exits that lead out to Tanglin Halt Road and Commonwealth Drive respectively.
