About
United we stand, divided we fall. Such a notion fuelled the creation of Jurong Island, a large piece of land that was once comprised of 7 islands - Pulau Ayer Chawan, Pulau Ayer Merbau, Pulau Merlimau, Pulau Pesek, Pulau Pesek Kecil, Pulau Sakra and Pulau Seraya. In the 90s, these islands were combined to form Jurong Island, which had an up-sized land area that catered to the developing petrochemical industry.
The construction of Jurong Island was commissioned after petrochemical giants such as Esso and Mobil Oil decided to set up plants on Pulau Ayer Chawan and Pulau Pesek respectively. Because of these companies' booming business, the Singapore government identified the petrochemical industry as a sunrise industry that could contribute significantly to Singapore's economy. Since Esso, Mobil Oil and other companies were already located on the islands off Jurong, the government decided that this group of offshore islands would be an ideal location for Singapore 's petrochemical hub. In 1991, Jurong Town Corporation (JTC), a Government-Linked Company (GLC) was commissioned to merge and develop the islands.
Industry
Unity in diversity. Well, not really. Jurong Island sees a stark lack in diversity as all the industries deal with the same substance – chemicals. All the 88 companies in Jurong Island deal with oil refining, petrochemical manufacturing or specialty chemical manufacturing. Even if not diverse, these companies are surely united in their purpose of contributing to economic growth.
There are a number of facilities in Jurong Island catering to staff development and welfare. For instance, Jurong Island has a fire station in case of emergencies. JTC also takes extraordinary effort to maintain the island's appearance and surroundings by ensuring that landscaping occurs frequently. People who work in Jurong Island can take courses at the Chemical Process Technology Centre (CPTC) and Institute of Chemical and Engineering Sciences (ICES).
Transport
Only authorized personnel are allowed on the island. Authorized visitors can take Transit Network Consortium buses to the island.
