About
Thomson lies on the outskirts of the city centre, making it almost as full of bustle as the city itself. There is a mix of residences, hotels and shopping centres in Thomson. Everything here is relatively costly compared to the rest of Singapore, but is definitely cheaper than living in the Orchard vicinity. The region in Thomson that is further away from the city comprises fewer hotels, shopping centres and offices, and more private residences.
History
The district is named after John Turnbull Thomson, an architect and the first government surveyor of the Straits Settlements, of which Singapore was a part of. He designed and built several key structures in Singapore , including Kallang Bridge , part of St. Andrew's Cathedral and the waterworks for town supply. He also wrote a number of books on old Singapore and contributed to other publications.
Residences
Most of the residences in Thomson are private property and comprise condominiums, serviced apartments and landed property. Some of the more exclusive condominiums in this district include The Compass at Chancery and the Espana.
There is a school in Thomson, namely, Sanyu Adventist School. It is a premier Christian school started by the Seventh Day Adventist School and Sanyu High School. It caters to both primary and secondary education.
Shopping
A few shopping centres can be found in the Thomson area, the more prominent ones being United Square, Goldhill Plaza and Goldhill Centre. These two shopping centres also have offices. Other offices in Thomson include the Revenue House.
