About
Boon Lay is a residential and industrial estate located in the West, between Jurong West and the new Jurong West Extension. It is bordered by the Jurong Port Road, International road; Upper Jurong Road to the north; Pan Island Expressway; Tuas Road to the west and Selat Jurong to the south.
There are also nine sub-zones in Boon Lay mainly Tukang, Joo Koon, Gul Circle , Benoi Sector, Liu Fang, Samulun, Shipyard, Gul Basin and Pioneer Sector.
History
Boon Lay was named after Mr Chew Boon Lay, a prominent businessman in the late 19th century and early 20th century. His rubber plantation paved the way for the growth of Boon Lay village.
A part of Boon Lay used to be a swampy jungle until the 1960s when large-scale industrialization was introduced in Singapore . It was chosen as the site for Singapore 's first industrial estate with its first factory, the National Iron and Steel Mills, built in 1 September 1962.

- Jurong Hill Park
Jurong Hill Park offers respite from the otherwise concrete feature of Boon Lay and Jurong with its garden beauty. A popular trait if Jurong Hill Park is its spiral tower that offers a 360° vista of Jurong. The natural beauty of Jurong Hill Park is further enhanced by carefully-sculpted landscaped gardens. This park has attracted the attention of reputed personalities such as In addition, there is a Garden of Fame on the hilltop where illustrious visitors such as Queen Elizabeth II, President Suharto and President Benjamin Henry Sheares whom have planted trees here.
- Jurong Bird Park
This 20.2 38 ha open park is home to 9,000 birds and 600 species, and is among the largest in the world. It boasts four aviaries and the largest man-made waterfall.
Industrial
Many factories are located here. There are also plans to redevelop old factories to become modern high-density factories. Interestingly, the world's largest chocolate company, Barry Callebaut, can be found here.
Transportation
- MRT
There are two Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) stations closely situated to serve residents -Lakeside MRT and Boon Lay MRT stations - SBS
The permanent bus interchange will be ready in 2009. In the meantime the temporary bus interchange caters 30 bus services.
Malaysian Inter-State Express Buses is located at the former Savoy Movie theatre and caters routes to certain parts of Malaysia.
