History: Rochor had a settled population even before the arrival of Singapore’s founder Sir Stamford Raffles. It was architecturally rich with interesting old buildings and was also home to Singapore’s first race course.
Back in 1819, the first Indian settlers in Singapore arrived with Sir Stamford Raffles as assistants and soldiers. As they began to settle down in this area and as many more Indian immigrants arrived to find work; as labourers to build roads or to take up key positions in the civil service, Little India grew to become the spice and cultural hub it is today.
Residential:There are many new HDB estates in Farrer Park & Mount Emily. You can also get see many shophouses here where both locals and expatriates reside. Place of Interest: This place is extremely busy on the weekends. Explore its spice-scented streets, ethnic jewellery, jasmine garlands and silk saris. Colourful temples co-exist side by side with churches and mosques, parrot fortune tellers stationed by the five-foot way and the tantalising aroma of spices drifting out from restaurants.
